Hi, neighbor!

Founder Jade launched Clockout DC in 2019 while working as an economist by day and moonlighting as a bartender on the weekends. Looking for one-of-a-kind events to transform a regular Tuesday night into a Saturday, Clockout DC was born.

Why I clocked out

Short story: I launched Clockout DC because I bought a ticket to Japan. Longer story: Needing to fund my trip, I snagged a second job as a bartender, leaving little-to-no calendar space for weekend activities.

As a DC native who grew up in Arlington, I didn’t spend my weekends attending soccer practice like other kids in my neighborhood. My mom and I didn’t have a car, so we rode the metro into the city to explore art galleries, museums, and festivals. Zoom forward 15 years, these experiences served a personal crash course in discovering uncovered, underrepresented events that only DC can offer.

Three years and thousands of events later, Clockout DC is a space to discover budget-friendly, accessible events often hosted by underrepresented groups. While this site and newsletter has always—and will always—be told from my own, personal viewpoint, I built this to support all Washingtonians in discovering their city.

So, to the DC locals often left out of the conversion, to the small business owners left out of mainstream media, to my Asian friends left out of the influencer space, to the local creatives told DC has no culture, to neighbors looking for safe, affordable things to do on a budget; and to every person who left me a kind message along the way…

This is for you. Thank you for your support and encouragement.

XO, Jade
